How to Use the Restored 37 Corbett Route

Plan an easier approach to Buena Vista Park using the four inbound 37 Corbett stops restored on September 28, including stop numbers.

The 37 Corbett resumed its regular inbound route through Buena Vista on Monday, September 28, 2026. Visitors can once again board an inbound bus at Market and Castro, look for the “Masonic + Haight” destination, and let Muni handle the road climb before entering Buena Vista Park from higher ground. Four inbound stops have returned, including two with nearly identical names.

Choose what you want to do near Buena Vista; the tool identifies the useful restored stop or rain-safe alternative.

Four Inbound Buena Vista Stops Have Returned

The restored stops appear in this order as an inbound 37 Corbett travels toward the Haight:

  1. Buena Vista Terrace & Buena Vista Avenue East — stop 13819
  2. Buena Vista Avenue East & Buena Vista Terrace — stop 13818
  3. Upper Terrace & Buena Vista Avenue West — stop 16796
  4. Upper Terrace & Masonic Avenue — stop 16797

The first two stops are easy to confuse. They use the same street names in reverse order, but they are separate stops with separate numbers. Confirm 13819 or 13818 in your trip planner rather than choosing solely by the intersection wording.

The distinction also matters when reading an arrival prediction or walking toward a pin on a map. A result for Buena Vista Terrace at Buena Vista Avenue East is not automatically the same boarding or drop-off point as a result for Buena Vista Avenue East at Buena Vista Terrace. The stop number is the unambiguous identifier.

The official 37 Corbett route page lists all four stops in sequence and shows the route as active. That page is also the appropriate place to check arrivals before leaving Market and Castro or timing a connection.

These are specifically restored inbound stops. The restoration notice does not establish that every stop, direction or trip pattern elsewhere on the line changed on September 28. For this visit, the practical instruction is to use the bus displaying “Masonic + Haight” from Market and Castro and verify that the selected stop is on that inbound trip.

The Smaller Buses Made the Restoration Possible

SFMTA restored regular routing after returning its smaller 30-foot buses to service. The agency says those buses received reinforced, redesigned parts following a vehicle issue identified in June. It also established a new inspection interval of every 2,000 miles.

While the 30-foot vehicles were unavailable, temporary 40-foot buses served the route. Those longer buses could not negotiate parts of Buena Vista Terrace, Buena Vista Avenue East and Upper Terrace, so they bypassed that section by using Roosevelt Way. The four inbound stops within the bypassed section were therefore unavailable during the temporary routing.

With the 30-foot buses back, SFMTA says regular routing and all inbound Buena Vista stops have been restored. The restoration is not merely a change to a timetable or map label: it places inbound service back on the streets where the four listed stops are located.

The agency’s notice supplies the bus lengths, the reason the temporary buses could not follow the regular alignment, the redesign work and the 2,000-mile inspection interval. It does not provide a walking-time comparison, an amount of elevation avoided or a measured distance saved for park visitors. Those figures should not be inferred from the route restoration alone.

Board at Market and Castro for the Uphill Approach

At Market and Castro, board a 37 showing “Masonic + Haight.” The inbound bus travels along Market and 14th Street before climbing toward Buena Vista. That destination sign is the clearest check that the bus is heading toward the restored Buena Vista stops and the Haight rather than away from them.

For direct park access, the useful choices are the two Buena Vista Avenue stops or Upper Terrace & Buena Vista Avenue West. They allow a visitor to begin near higher-ground park access rather than walking the approach from the Haight Street edge.

The route restoration does not make Buena Vista Park flat. San Francisco Recreation and Parks describes it as a park of winding trails with views from its upper slopes. Riding the bus changes the approach to the park; it does not remove the slopes, irregular trail conditions or elevation changes inside it.

That difference is useful when planning the day. A traveler who mainly wants to avoid spending energy on the road approach can ride to one of the restored stops and still choose how much of the park to explore. Someone who needs a completely level outing should not treat the restored bus route as proof that the park trails themselves meet that requirement.

The available SFMTA information does not assign a specific park entrance to each of the three most useful stops, nor does it quantify the walking distance from each stop to a trail. Use the stop names and numbers to choose the side of the Buena Vista area that fits the rest of your route, then check the current map in your trip planner.

For a separate look at the park’s high point versus the climb associated with a particular approach, see Buena Vista Park elevation and route gain. That distinction prevents two different questions from being collapsed into one: the elevation of the park is not the same measurement as the elevation gained on the walk used to reach it.

A One-Way Downhill Plan Uses the Route Best

A practical outing is to use the 37 Corbett for the uphill road approach, leave the bus at a Buena Vista Avenue or Upper Terrace stop, and walk generally downhill toward Haight Street. This makes the restored segment part of a one-way route rather than requiring a return to the same stop.

The two Buena Vista-named stops are the most obvious choices when the park itself is the priority. Upper Terrace & Buena Vista Avenue West — stop 16796 is another park-access option. Upper Terrace & Masonic Avenue — stop 16797 follows it in the inbound sequence and is more useful when the next part of the plan points toward Masonic Avenue rather than requiring the earliest possible exit near Buena Vista.

Do not treat that sequence as a ranking from best to worst. The first stop is not automatically the best stop for every walk, and the final restored stop is not automatically too late. The correct choice depends on whether the goal is a Buena Vista Avenue approach, an Upper Terrace approach or continuing toward the Haight.

A simple trip-planning sequence is:

  1. At Market and Castro, verify the bus shows “Masonic + Haight.”
  2. In the trip planner, confirm the chosen stop number, especially for stops 13819 and 13818.
  3. Use a Buena Vista Avenue or Upper Terrace stop for a higher-ground park approach.
  4. Walk generally downhill toward Haight Street if trail conditions suit the visit.
  5. Use the Haight alternatives instead of the park trails when rain makes the winding paths a poor choice.

This plan is directional rather than a promise of a continuously downhill or step-free walk. The park has winding trails and upper slopes, and the cited sources do not provide an accessible-route assessment for this itinerary.

Rain Changes the Best Place to Leave the Bus

In rain, stay aboard rather than relying on the winding park trails. The useful alternatives are Cole and Haight or Masonic and Haight. Both keep the trip focused on reaching the Haight instead of entering the park from the restored Buena Vista section.

This does not mean the restored stops cease operating whenever it rains. It is a route-choice recommendation based on the park’s trail character, not a statement about a weather-related transit suspension. Check SFMTA separately for any active service alert.

The distinction also helps when forecasts are uncertain. If conditions are suitable on arrival, use one of the restored Buena Vista or Upper Terrace stops for the park approach. If the trails are wet enough that the park no longer fits the plan, remain on the inbound bus for Cole and Haight or Masonic and Haight. There is no need to commit to a park stop merely because it was selected before boarding.

Service Hours Differ on Weekdays and Weekends

SFMTA currently lists 37 Corbett service from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekends. Service is generally listed at 20- to 30-minute intervals.

Day Listed Service Window General Interval
Weekdays 6 a.m.–10 p.m. 20–30 minutes
Weekends 9 a.m.–10 p.m. 20–30 minutes

The weekend start is later than the weekday start, while the listed end time is 10 p.m. for both. These are published service spans and general intervals, not a live prediction for a particular stop. Check arrivals on the official route page before committing to the transfer.

A 20- to 30-minute general interval can materially affect a connection, so the live check is more useful than arriving on the assumption that a bus will appear at a fixed minute. The cited route information does not provide a guarantee that every individual trip will operate at exactly those intervals.

Buena Vista Park’s official hours are 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. The transit and park windows are separate. A bus being scheduled does not by itself confirm that a particular park facility or restroom is open. Check the Recreation and Parks page for current facility information and seasonal restroom hours.

The later weekend start also means an early weekend park visit cannot be planned from the weekday 6 a.m. service figure. SFMTA lists weekend service beginning at 9 a.m.; travelers planning before that time need to check another route or another approach rather than assuming the weekday schedule applies.

Check the Stop Number Before Leaving the Bus

The strongest confirmation is a combination of direction, stop name and stop number. Start with the inbound “Masonic + Haight” sign. Then match the planned stop to its number:

  • 13819 for Buena Vista Terrace & Buena Vista Avenue East
  • 13818 for Buena Vista Avenue East & Buena Vista Terrace
  • 16796 for Upper Terrace & Buena Vista Avenue West
  • 16797 for Upper Terrace & Masonic Avenue

This is especially useful if a map truncates a long intersection name. The two Buena Vista names contain the same streets, and a quick glance can make them appear interchangeable. Their stop numbers show that they are not.

For most visitors, the restored route’s value is straightforward: the inbound 37 Corbett can once again carry riders through the Buena Vista street segment that the temporary 40-foot buses had to bypass. Use the restored Buena Vista or Upper Terrace stops for the park approach, or stay aboard to Cole and Haight or Masonic and Haight when wet trails make the park a poor fit.
