Catch the F Before Its Castro Terminal

Plan the right F stop for the 2026 Castro Street Fair, see when weekend switchbacks apply, and check Sunday street closures and Muni detours.

Elena Park Published Sep 29, 2026 8 Min Read

For the 2026 Castro Street Fair, take an outbound F Market & Wharves streetcar to Market and Noe streets, the last accessible stop before the streetcar switches back toward downtown. The normal terminal at 17th and Castro will not be served on Saturday, October 3, or Sunday, October 4. For the return trip, use the temporary stop at 17th and Sanchez or the existing J Church stop at Church and Market. The fair runs 11 a.m.–6 p.m. Sunday, but Sunday street closures begin at 2 a.m. and most affected Muni routes remain detoured until 11 p.m. SFMTA’s event notice contains the service table and map.

Choose your day, direction and boarding requirement to identify the appropriate F stop.

F Stop Planner

Sunday arrival
Get off at Market and Noe

Board an outbound F toward the Castro. Market and Noe is the final stop before the streetcar switches back and is the last designated accessible outbound stop.

The fair runs 11 a.m.–6 p.m., but the F switchback applies throughout Sunday service.

Take The Outbound F To Market And Noe

From Fisherman’s Wharf, the Ferry Building or downtown, board an outbound F toward the Castro. The direction displayed on the streetcar remains useful even though the vehicle will not complete its usual trip to Castro Street.

Get off at Market and Noe streets. SFMTA identifies this as the final stop before the shortened F turns back toward downtown, as well as the last accessible stop on the outbound route. The stop is at the Market Street edge of the fair, so it provides the simplest F-line arrival without requiring a transfer to another detoured surface route.

Do not remain aboard expecting the regular terminal at 17th and Castro. It will not be served during the weekend switchback. Waiting at that terminal for an inbound or outbound F will also leave you outside the temporary operating pattern.

The essential distinction is between the destination displayed on the streetcar and the place where it actually turns. “Outbound to the Castro” is still the correct direction for reaching the fair. Market and Noe, rather than 17th and Castro, is where that outbound trip ends for passengers.

This arrangement applies during F-line service on both Saturday and Sunday. The fair itself is Sunday, but the shortened F route begins a day earlier. A Saturday visit to the Castro therefore requires the same F stop plan even though the main Sunday street-closure schedule does not yet apply.

Leave From 17th And Sanchez Or Church And Market

SFMTA lists two places to board an inbound F toward downtown and Fisherman’s Wharf during the switchback:

  • 17th and Sanchez streets, southeast corner: a temporary flag stop
  • Church and Market streets: the existing J Church stop

The temporary stop at 17th and Sanchez is the closer of the two choices from the fair. Because it is a flag stop rather than the usual streetcar terminal, look for event signage at the southeast corner and signal to the operator as the F approaches.

Church and Market is farther from the fair but uses an established transit stop. It can be the clearer choice for someone who would rather wait at an existing stop than identify a temporary curbside boarding point.

After serving the temporary arrangement, the F resumes its regular inbound route at Market and Dolores, with Fisherman’s Wharf as its destination. Riders going to downtown, the Ferry Building or the wharf should therefore board an inbound streetcar at one of the two listed alternatives rather than trying to reach the closed Castro terminal.

The arrival and departure stops are not interchangeable. Market and Noe is the designated outbound arrival, while 17th and Sanchez or Church and Market are the inbound boarding choices. Saving both locations avoids returning automatically to the place where you got off.

Accessible Arrival Is Confirmed, But Accessible Return Is Not

SFMTA specifically identifies Market and Noe as the last accessible stop on the shortened outbound F route. That makes the arrival decision clear for riders who need the designated accessible stop: leave the streetcar there rather than continuing toward the unserved terminal.

The published event notice does not give the same accessibility designation to either inbound alternative. It lists 17th and Sanchez as a temporary flag stop and Church and Market as the existing J Church stop, but it does not state that either provides accessible F boarding for this event.

Do not treat the temporary flag stop as equivalent to the regular Castro terminal’s boarding setup. Riders who need level or otherwise accessible boarding for the return trip should check a current SFMTA alert or contact 311 before choosing between the two inbound locations. The available event information supports an accessible outbound arrival plan, but it does not establish an accessible return stop.

That difference matters when planning a round trip. A confirmed accessible arrival at Market and Noe does not by itself confirm that the return journey can begin at 17th and Sanchez or Church and Market under the same conditions.

The F Switchback Covers Both Weekend Days

The F Market & Wharves switchback is scheduled for all day Saturday, October 3, and Sunday, October 4, during F-line service. It is not limited to the fair’s six operating hours and is not limited to Sunday.

Sunday has several overlapping event windows:

Period Scheduled Change Affected Service
Saturday, all F service F switches back short of Castro F Market & Wharves
Sunday, 2 a.m.–11 p.m. Event streets closed Fair area streets
Sunday, 6–8 a.m. Early bus detour K Ingleside bus
Sunday, 6 a.m.–11 p.m. Surface-route detours 24, 33, 35 and 37
Sunday, 11 a.m.–6 p.m. Castro Street Fair open Event grounds
Sunday, all F service F switches back short of Castro F Market & Wharves

The sequence explains why the normal route may be unavailable even when the fair is not open. On Sunday, streets close at 2 a.m., four listed surface routes begin their detours at 6 a.m., and the fair opens at 11 a.m. The fair ends at 6 p.m., but the closures and those detours are scheduled to continue until 11 p.m.

A trip after 6 p.m. therefore still requires the event routing. The end of public fair hours does not reopen the streets or restore the listed Muni routes immediately. Likewise, an early Sunday trip can encounter closures and detours before the stages and fair activity begin.

Saturday requires a narrower distinction. The published F switchback applies that day, but the listed fair hours, street closures and other route detours are for Sunday. The Saturday service change should not be read as evidence that every Sunday closure or bus detour also operates Saturday.

Sunday Closures Extend Across The Fair Area

SFMTA lists the following street closures from 2 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday:

  • Castro from 16th to 19th
  • Market from Noe to Diamond
  • 17th from Hartford to Castro
  • 18th from Noe to Eureka
  • Hartford from 17th to 19th
  • Collingwood from 19th to Market
  • Diamond from Market to 18th

These closures cover more than Castro Street itself. Market, 17th, 18th and several connecting streets are included, which is why multiple routes need temporary terminals, switchbacks or detours rather than a minor stop adjustment.

The closure of Market from Noe to Diamond also explains the F’s shortened outbound path. Market and Noe sits at the edge of the listed closure, while the usual 17th-and-Castro terminal lies beyond the point where the streetcar turns back.

The organizer confirms that the fair takes place 11 a.m.–6 p.m. Sunday, October 4, with three stages spread along Market, Castro and 18th streets. The event schedule and fair information are available from the official Castro Street Fair site.

Because the closure window lasts from 2 a.m. until 11 p.m., a closed block should not be used as evidence that the fair is currently admitting visitors or that stage programming has begun. The transit and street-control period is substantially longer than the public event.

Four Bus Routes Detour Until 11 P.M.

From 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday, the 24 Divisadero, 33 Ashbury/18th, 35 Eureka and 37 Corbett bypass portions of the fair area.

The 24 uses Sanchez around the closure. The 33 shifts across 19th. The 35 and 37 switch back or detour before reaching their usual Castro-area stops. Each route and direction has its own temporary stopping pattern, so a normal stop on the map may not be served even when the bus remains nearby.

The K Ingleside bus is affected only during its early-morning bus-service window, 6–8 a.m. That is a narrower period than the 6 a.m.–11 p.m. detours for the four listed surface routes. The published notice does not support applying the K bus detour to the entire day.

Temporary corners vary by route and direction. Use the route-specific table in the SFMTA event notice rather than walking automatically to a regular stop inside the closure area.

The F differs from these Sunday-only bus changes in two ways. Its switchback applies on Saturday as well as Sunday, and it lasts throughout F-line service rather than beginning at 6 a.m. Sunday. Treating every affected route as though it shared one detour window would produce the wrong plan.

Match The Stop To Your Direction

For an F trip from Fisherman’s Wharf, the Ferry Building or downtown, the plan is direct: board outbound toward the Castro, leave at Market and Noe, and enter the fair from its Market Street edge. Do not wait for the streetcar to reach 17th and Castro.

For the return toward downtown or Fisherman’s Wharf, walk to 17th and Sanchez for the closer temporary flag stop or use Church and Market for an existing stop. At 17th and Sanchez, wait at the southeast corner, watch for event signage and signal to the operator.

For a rider who needs accessible boarding in both directions, only the outbound portion is resolved by the event notice. Market and Noe is designated as the last accessible outbound stop, but neither published inbound alternative is designated accessible. Confirm the return arrangement through a current SFMTA alert or 311 rather than relying on the normal terminal setup.

For a Saturday trip, use the same shortened F plan even though the fair is not scheduled until Sunday. For a Sunday trip before 11 a.m. or after 6 p.m., continue to use the event plan because the transit and closure windows extend beyond fair hours.

The two locations to retain are Market and Noe for arrival and 17th and Sanchez for the closest return toward downtown. Church and Market remains the listed existing-stop alternative for the inbound journey.
