If you are riding a Blue or Green Line train and continuing to San Francisco International Airport, do not wait until its Daly City terminus to change trains. Get off one stop earlier at Balboa Park and wait on the same platform for a Red or Yellow Line train whose destination includes SFO Airport.
That small decision matters most when you have a suitcase, stroller or limited mobility.
Why the Daly City transfer is now awkward
BART changed its Daly City operations on August 10, 2026. Blue and Green Line trains now terminate at Platform 3, which is exit-only; the trains then go out of service. Airport-bound Red and Yellow Line trains board elsewhere in the station. BART therefore tells Blue and Green Line riders continuing beyond Daly City—including to SFO—to transfer at Balboa Park for an easier, same-platform connection. Transferring at Daly City now requires changing platforms, according to BART’s announcement of the August service change.
This is an easy trap because the train is still traveling in the correct general direction and Daly City appears closer to the airport on the map. But staying aboard does not eliminate the transfer. It merely moves it to a station where you must relocate your luggage before boarding the next train.
The luggage-friendly move at Balboa Park
- Check the train you boarded. If it is Blue or Green and its destination is Daly City, it will not continue to SFO.
- Exit at Balboa Park. Do not leave the station or follow signs toward the street.
- Stay on southbound Platform 1. BART’s station schedule places Daly City-bound and SFO-bound service on that platform, so no stairs or elevator are needed for the transfer (Balboa Park station schedule).
- Board a train whose destination sign includes SFO Airport. Check the destination rather than relying only on line color: the same platform also serves more Daly City-bound trains, which would recreate the problem.
If you are already on a Red or Yellow Line train displaying SFO as part of its destination, stay aboard. This advice applies only when your train terminates at Daly City.
If you miss Balboa Park, get off at Daly City and follow signs or staff directions to an SFO-bound train. Do not exit through the fare gates; the drawback is the platform change, not a second fare.
Allow extra time late at night
As of September 30, 2026, BART warns of 30-minute delays starting at 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday for riders traveling between Daly City, SFO and Millbrae because of train-control modernization work (current BART schedule notice). Build that time into a flight-day plan, and check live instructions before leaving with this broader San Francisco BART trip-check guide.
The useful rule is simple: Blue or Green Line to Daly City, then SFO means transfer at Balboa Park—not Daly City.
