The Hyde Ride is a seasonal $9 cable-car loop that leaves the Hyde and Beach terminal at Aquatic Park, climbs Russian Hill, passes the Cable Car Museum and Chinatown, and comes back to Hyde and Beach after roughly 25 minutes on board. It runs Fridays through Sundays through October 4, 2026, plus Monday, September 7, and did not run on July 4. Take it if you want a short historic ride that ends where it started. Take the regular Powell/Hyde line, which boards at the same terminal, if you need Union Square or Powell and Market; the Hyde Ride turns back before it gets there.

Hyde Ride at Hyde & Beach
Saturday is an announced Hyde Ride operating day. Market Street Railway says the loop adds capacity at Aquatic Park; SFist repeated that claim without independent wait data, so treat shorter waits as likely, not proven.
| Fare | $9 (one Market Street Railway page calls it a single ride, the other a ~25-minute round trip) |
|---|---|
| Boards | Hyde & Beach, Aquatic Park |
| Ends | Hyde & Beach (loop via Russian Hill, Cable Car Museum, Chinatown) |
| Runs | Fri–Sun through Oct 4, 2026, plus Mon Sep 7; not Jul 4. Hours and frequency not published. |
| Wait | — no published wait figures for either service |

The Hyde Ride Is a Loop, Not Another Name for Powell/Hyde
The easiest mistake is treating “Hyde Ride” as a nickname for the Powell/Hyde line. They share a terminal and the first stretch of Hyde Street, then diverge in purpose.
| Detail | Hyde Ride | Powell/Hyde |
|---|---|---|
| Service | Seasonal heritage loop | Regular Muni cable-car line |
| Boards | Hyde and Beach | Hyde and Beach |
| Ends | Hyde and Beach | Powell and Market |
| Days | Fri–Sun through Oct 4, 2026 | Daily, about 7 a.m.–11 p.m. |
| Fare | $9 special fare | Standard cable-car fare |
| Best for | A short ride back to the waterfront | Getting to Union Square or Market Street |
The Hyde Ride reaches Powell Street in Chinatown and turns back toward Aquatic Park. It never reaches the Powell and Market turntable or Union Square.
The regular Powell/Hyde line runs between Hyde and Beach and Powell and Market. Inbound cars travel via Hyde, Washington and Powell; outbound cars use Powell, Jackson and Hyde. SFMTA lists the line as operating approximately 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily, subject to service changes. Check the Powell/Hyde route, stops and live status on SFMTA.
The standard cable-car fare is not restated here; confirm it on SFMTA before you go.
2026 Dates and Fare, and Where the Two Announcements Disagree
Board at the Hyde Street cable-car terminal at Hyde and Beach Streets in Aquatic Park, beside Victorian Park and a short walk from Ghirardelli Square.
Market Street Railway’s volunteer-recruiting page set the plan as Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from May 29 through October 4, 2026, suspended on July 4 and operating on Monday, September 7. That page describes the $9 fare as a round trip lasting approximately 25 minutes. Read the Market Street Railway guide-recruiting announcement.
Market Street Railway’s separate Hyde Ride page gives a June 1 opening and calls $9 a single-ride fare. The two pages therefore conflict on the start date and on how the fare is described. See the Hyde Ride information page. For a September or early-October visit the opening-date conflict no longer matters; the fare wording does.
Read “round trip” as a description of the loop returning to Aquatic Park, not as permission to step off and reboard later. Nothing published establishes hop-on, hop-off privileges, transfers or reboarding on the same $9 fare. Departure frequency and daily operating hours for the Hyde Ride are also not published in either announcement.
All dates and prices above are announced 2026 information, not a guarantee that a particular departure will operate. Check SFMTA’s current service information on the day.
Where the Loop Goes, in Travel Order
The car leaves Aquatic Park on Hyde Street, climbs through Russian Hill and passes the Lombard Street crest. It turns onto Washington Street past the Cable Car Museum, reaches Powell Street in Chinatown, returns by Jackson Street and Hyde Street, and finishes at Hyde and Beach.
In one line: Hyde and Beach, then Hyde at Lombard, then Washington past the Cable Car Museum, then Powell in Chinatown, then Jackson, then back to Hyde and Beach.
That final leg is the point: the car heads north to the waterfront rather than south on Powell to Market. SFist’s July 16, 2026 report described the same loop past the Cable Car Museum, through Chinatown and back to the Beach Street terminus. Its claims about added capacity and shorter Aquatic Park waits were attributed to Market Street Railway, not backed by independent operating data. Read SFist’s report on the seasonal Hyde Ride.
Lombard Street, the museum and Chinatown are places the route passes. Treat them as scenery from the running board, not as stops you can leave and rejoin on one fare.
Buying a Fare and Avoiding an Unnecessary Wait
SFMTA’s general cable-car rule requires passengers boarding at Hyde and Beach, Powell and Market, or Bay and Taylor to purchase their fare before boarding from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.
SFMTA’s cable-car guidance lists MuniMobile, Clipper and exact-change cash as payment options for the regular lines. That does not confirm that every one of those methods, or a Visitor Passport, is accepted on the seasonal $9 Hyde Ride. Review SFMTA’s current cable-car ticket and boarding guidance.
Before you walk to the terminal, confirm the current Hyde Ride fare, which payment products it accepts, whether anything must be bought or activated in advance, and whether any pass covers it. None of those points are settled by the published announcements.
For the regular Powell/Hyde line, riding outside the busiest sightseeing hours lowers the odds of a long terminal queue. Boarding at a marked intermediate stop can bypass the turnaround line, but a full car may pass without taking anyone on. Do not apply that tactic to the Hyde Ride: nothing published establishes its departure frequency, intermediate boarding or space aboard a given car.
Historic Cars, Docents, and What Is Not Guaranteed
The 2026 plan called for a rotation of historic double-ended cable cars, accompanied when available by volunteer Market Street Railway docents. The named rotation was Sacramento-Clay Car 19, O’Farrell, Jones & Hyde Car 42, California Street Car 53 and California Street Car 55.
Car 19, “Big 19,” dates to 1883 and cannot fit on standard turntables, which is why the double-ended loop suits it. The rotation is context, not a promise: no particular car, docent or crew is guaranteed on any departure. If a narrated ride is your reason for going, the loop is still the best bet on a Friday-to-Sunday date, and the Cable Car Museum on Washington Street is the fallback on any other day.
Cable cars are not equipped with accessible boarding. Travelers who cannot use the boarding arrangement should ask SFMTA for a current accessible alternative rather than assume a cable car can accommodate them. Full-size and folding bicycles are prohibited.
While riding, hold on and do not lean outward. Wait for the car to stop completely before exiting, then check traffic. At cable-car intersections the green “X” signal is for the car, not pedestrians. These accessibility, bicycle and safety rules come from SFMTA’s cable-car guidance linked above.
A Half-Day Plan That Ends Back at Ghirardelli Square
Start at Aquatic Park and walk to the Hyde and Beach terminal. Ride the full loop and step off at the same terminal after about 25 minutes of announced onboard time. From there, continue on foot to Ghirardelli Square, walk east toward Fisherman’s Wharf, or stay along the waterfront.
This order means you climb Russian Hill once, by cable, and never have to recover ground. It also keeps the afternoon flexible. Do not book the next activity tightly against the ride: the queue length and exact departure time are not published, so leave an open block around it.
If You Need Union Square Instead
Use a different plan. Start at Hyde and Beach and board the regular Powell/Hyde line, not the Hyde Ride. Stay aboard along Hyde, including the Lombard crest, then Washington and Powell, and get off at Powell and Market for Union Square and downtown connections. That is also the ride for the classic turntable photo, since the Hyde Ride’s double-ended cars never use one.
If you want time on Lombard Street, in Chinatown or inside the Cable Car Museum, treat each as a separate stop and confirm the fare or pass that covers it. Do not assume the $9 Hyde Ride fare permits repeated exits and reboarding.
Does the Hyde Ride Go to Union Square or Powell and Market?
No. It reaches Powell Street in Chinatown and turns back toward Aquatic Park. Take the regular Powell/Hyde line for Union Square or the Market Street terminal.
Will the Hyde Ride Run After October 4, 2026?
The announced season ends October 4. Nothing published establishes service after that date or confirms a 2027 season. Check SFMTA before planning around it.
Is a Specific Historic Car Guaranteed on My Trip?
No. Four cars were listed for the rotation, but no specific car, docent or crew is promised for any departure.
Take the Hyde Ride for a short seasonal loop that returns to Aquatic Park; take Powell/Hyde when your day continues to Union Square or Market Street. Same-day SFMTA information overrides every schedule, fare and payment detail above.
