As of October 3, 2026, SFMTA’s pages do not clearly confirm that the new Castro Station elevator has entered passenger service. That is different from saying Castro Station has no elevator access: at the status page’s displayed timestamp of 7:36 p.m. on October 2, Castro was listed as accessible, with its listed street and platform elevators in service. Check current Castro elevator status before relying on that access.
Why “completed” isn’t an opening announcement
The Castro accessibility project page projects completion in fall 2026. Its timeline labels construction “Completed,” but its current phase still says “In Progress.” Neither label establishes that passengers can use the new lift.
Meanwhile, SFMTA’s weekly advisory, currently covering October 1–7, says construction is “wrapping up” and describes the access it will provide “once completed.” Do not plan a transfer around the new entrance without confirming that it is open.
What the new Market Street connection is designed to do
The new elevator is designed to serve four levels:
- Market Street sidewalk
- Harvey Milk Plaza
- Station concourse, where riders enter through the fare gates
- Train platform level
The added Market Street stop is intended to let riders of the 35 Eureka and 37 Corbett enter directly from the sidewalk and descend to the concourse. Adding a second elevator is also intended to preserve access when the existing elevator needs servicing—not to guarantee that outages will never occur. SFMTA’s project description explains both purposes.
Check your whole step-free path
At the October 2 timestamp above, Castro’s three listed elevators were in service:
| Part of the journey | Entry to check |
|---|---|
| Street to station | Market & Castro – Street Elevator |
| Eastbound train platform | Platform Elevator – Eastbound |
| Westbound train platform | Platform Elevator – Westbound |
Those status entries do not separately identify the new four-stop elevator as open. For an elevator-dependent trip:
- Reload the live elevator page shortly before leaving. Check Castro’s street elevator and the platform elevator for your direction.
- Check your other stations too. A working elevator at Castro does not establish a step-free route at your boarding station, transfer or destination. If using Powell or Union Square / Market Street, check both: SFMTA says their concourses connect and the status summaries may not fully reflect the alternative street-elevator access.
- Confirm the entrance if anything is unclear. The project page identifies an operational elevator on the north side of Market Street. The weekly advisory instead mentions an escalator; an escalator is not a step-free substitute.
SFMTA directs riders to the nearest station agent for elevator problems, or 311 outside a station; from outside San Francisco, call 415-701-2311. If an outage requires a different route, confirm that route before heading to another station. In rain or strong wind, a door-to-door ride that meets your accessibility needs may be preferable to an unverified surface walk.
