As of October 6, 2026: A San Francisco Waymo–Muni connection can meet the announced rules for a $2.85 Waymo Cash reward if you have program access, link your Visa card in the Waymo app, and use that card for both trips within two hours. But budget for both fares in full: the reward is credit toward a future Waymo ride, not money off the Muni trip you are taking. (Waymo’s announcement, Mashable)
Is it available to visitors yet?
Waymo announced the program on September 22, 2026, starting in the Bay Area. Its stated sequence is employee access first, then a gradual public rollout “in the coming weeks.” That is not a fixed public launch date or a promise that every visitor’s account already has access. Check whether you can enroll in the app before counting on a reward. (Announcement date, rollout details)
What makes a Muni connection eligible?
The announced requirements are:
| Check | What you need |
|---|---|
| Program access | Access through the staged rollout, with your Visa linked in the Waymo app |
| Waymo payment | Pay for the Bay Area Waymo trip with that linked Visa |
| Transit payment | Pay directly for transit using the same Visa’s contactless tap-to-pay function |
| Timing | Take the Waymo and transit trips within two hours of each other |
Waymo says the program covers all 27 Bay Area transit agencies accepting contactless Visa tap-to-pay. Muni supports direct bank-card payment on buses and at Metro fare gates, so a qualifying Muni connection fits the program. The announcement says “within 2 hours of each other,” without specifying an order; that wording accommodates Waymo then Muni, or Muni then Waymo. (Waymo, SFMTA payment instructions)
A Visa credit or debit card can participate. Paying Muni with cash, a Clipper card or a MuniMobile ticket does not match the announced direct-Visa payment requirement—even if you used Visa to buy the ticket or load Clipper. Other bank-card brands work for transit, but this Waymo offer specifies Visa. (Mashable, Clipper contactless rules)
The announcement does not define exactly which trip timestamps control the two-hour calculation. Leave a comfortable margin rather than planning a connection at the cutoff.
What should you budget?
Pay the quoted Waymo price and the applicable Muni fare now. Waymo says it will automatically issue $2.85 in Waymo Cash for a qualifying connection; that credit goes toward a later robotaxi ride. If you do not expect to use the credit on a later ride, do not count it as a saving in your trip budget. (Waymo, Mashable)
Two separate transit rules are easy to confuse with this reward:
- Muni’s single-ride fare lasts 120 minutes across its buses and light rail. That is Muni fare validity, not the Waymo eligibility clock. (SFMTA)
- Regional transit-to-transit discounts can save up to $2.85 when transferring between agencies using the same payment card. Those are separate from Waymo Cash. Direct bank-card taps also charge adult fares; concession fares require the appropriate discount Clipper card. (Clipper)
For a visitor, the sensible use is a Waymo leg you already want—to avoid an uphill walk or reduce walking in rain—connected to Muni for the rest of the journey. Compare the full cost without the reward first; a $2.85 future credit is not a reason by itself to add a car trip.
