Alcatraz closes October 26–November 18: refunds and alternatives

Alcatraz’s 2026 dock-work closure dates, direct-booking refunds, planned reopening and a non-landing Bay cruise alternative from Pier 33.

Status checked October 3, 2026.

Alcatraz Island tours will not operate October 26 through November 18, 2026. Reopening is scheduled for November 19, but is not guaranteed. Alcatraz City Cruises confirms that all island tours in that window are affected. The National Park Service expects dock-piling repairs to finish by November 18 and warns that weather or other factors could change the timeline. (Operator closure notice, NPS announcement)

This is an island-access shutdown, not just a reduced ferry schedule. Crews will replace the two remaining pilings in the final phase of repairs to the ferry dock. Another sightseeing operator cannot provide a landing workaround: Alcatraz City Cruises is the only ferry provider authorized to dock and discharge visitors on Alcatraz. (NPS repair details, NPS access rules)

If you already have a reservation

The operator’s closure-specific instructions are straightforward:

  • Booked directly with Alcatraz City Cruises: affected reservations are canceled, with an automatic refund to the original payment method. No refund request is needed; allow 5–7 business days for processing.
  • Booked through a partner such as GetYourGuide or TripAdvisor: contact that booking provider directly for your options.
  • Want to reschedule: look for an available island tour before October 26 or from November 19 onward. Monitor your email and the closure page if booking near the planned reopening.

Guests with affected reservations will be contacted directly. For unresolved direct-booking questions, call 415-981-7625. (Closure and refund instructions, Guest Services)

Reschedule—or see Alcatraz from the water?

Choose by what you wanted from the visit, rather than treating the two tickets as interchangeable.

Option What you get Listed price
Rescheduled Alcatraz Day Tour Island access, Cellhouse Audio Tour and round-trip ferry from Pier 33 $47.95 adult
Bay Discovery Cruise A 90-minute round-trip sightseeing cruise from Pier 33; no island landing From $44

Both listed prices include fees and taxes, as checked October 3. See the official tour listings, NPS age-based fares and Bay Discovery booking page.

The operator currently advertises its closure alternative for October 26–November 1 only, subject to availability—not throughout the shutdown. It includes views of Alcatraz and other Bay landmarks; sailing under the Golden Gate Bridge is weather-dependent. Check your actual date before rebuilding the day around it, and allow at least 30 minutes at Pier 33 before departure, as the operator recommends. (Closure cruise dates, Cruise details)

If the cellhouse is your priority, reschedule the island visit. Reserve a half-day rather than squeezing it between major stops. Also distinguish ferry travel from walking effort: the island’s dock-to-cellhouse route rises about 130 feet over a quarter-mile; the S.E.A.T. tram serves visitors with mobility impairments. (NPS accessibility guide)

Keep the waterfront day coherent

For an available cruise replacement, pair Fisherman’s Wharf → Pier 33 cruise → a southbound Embarcadero walk → Ferry Building. Keep lunch flexible around the new departure, and avoid adding a Russian Hill climb merely because it looks nearby on the map. Our Fisherman’s Wharf walking plan helps organize the first section.

For rain or an unappealing Bay forecast, swap the boat for the Exploratorium at Pier 15 and continue south afterward. It is normally closed Mondays—important because the shutdown starts on a Monday. Check its special dates and hours before choosing this backup, or use our Ferry Building visit plan for a food-focused alternative. (Exploratorium visitor information)
