Reach the Pharaohs Exhibit Without the Wrong-Stop Detour

Find the right 44 stop for the de Young, connect from Muni rail or BART, and plan around Pharaohs timed tickets, museum hours and your return route.

Elena Park Published Sep 30, 2026 4 Min Read

Take the 44 O’Shaughnessy to the de Young’s Treasures of the Pharaohs, choosing your stop by direction: Richmond-bound buses stop at the Academy of Sciences; Hunters Point-bound buses stop beside the de Young. Your return stop may be different from your arrival stop. Standard exhibition tickets have timed entry, so plan the journey around your booked slot. 44 route and stops

The exhibition runs August 1, 2026–January 31, 2027 at 50 Hagiwara Tea Garden Drive. It brings together 130 works spanning 3,000 years, including monumental statues, gilded masks and gold jewelry. The museum lists the public exhibition ticket price as $40. Exhibition and booking details

Return toward the Richmond from Academy stop 14771. Return toward the Inner Sunset, Forest Hill, Glen Park or Hunters Point from de Young stop 14772. These stops are on a park loop, not directly opposite each other. The de Young stop’s listed destination is Bayview District—Hudson & Newhall.

The museum estimates a 15-minute walk from the N if you skip the 44 transfer. Scheduled midday 44 intervals are 10 minutes on weekdays and 12 minutes on weekends, not guaranteed waits.

Use the Museum Stop for Your Direction

Direction on the 44 Museum Stop Final Approach
Richmond-bound, from Glen Park, Forest Hill or the Inner Sunset Music Concourse Dr/Academy of Sciences — 14771 Walk across the Music Concourse toward the de Young.
Hunters Point-bound, from the Richmond Hagiwara Tea Garden Dr/de Young Museum — 14772 Use the museum-side approach to the entrance.

These are separate stops on the 44’s park loop, not a conventional pair directly across the street. Save the Academy stop page or the de Young stop page for arrival predictions. The de Young stop page lists its destination as Bayview District—Hudson & Newhall, the Hunters Point-bound direction.

For the return, use 14772 for the Inner Sunset, Forest Hill, Glen Park and Hunters Point. Use 14771 for the Richmond. Follow the destination and stop number rather than assuming you should board where you got off.

SFMTA lists scheduled midday service every 10 minutes on weekdays and 12 minutes on weekends. Those are scheduled intervals, not guaranteed waits. Check current service and predictions before leaving; the draft’s sources do not establish a door-to-door journey time for your starting point.

Connect From Rail Without a Long Park Approach

Choose the connection that fits where you already are rather than detouring to a particular station. Each of these rail connections puts you on a Richmond-bound 44, arriving at the Academy of Sciences stop.

From Downtown, Take the N to 9th and Irving

Take an Ocean Beach-bound N Judah to 9th Avenue & Irving Street, then board the Richmond-bound 44 at 9th & Irving, stop 13211. Ride to 14771 and walk across the Music Concourse.

The bus connection replaces the walk from the park’s southern edge. If you prefer to skip that transfer, the museum estimates a 15-minute walk from the N. That is a walking estimate, not the total journey time from downtown. Museum transit guidance

On the return, take the 44 from 14772 toward the Inner Sunset. Downtown-bound N trains stop at Irving & 8th, not the same stop where you arrived. N Judah stops

From the K, L or M, Transfer at Forest Hill

Leave Forest Hill station and board the Richmond-bound 44 at Laguna Honda Blvd/Forest Hill Station, stop 15245. Stay aboard to the Academy stop.

Use the bus rather than treating the map distance from Forest Hill as a walking shortcut. For the return to Forest Hill, board at 14772, beside the de Young.

From BART, Transfer at Glen Park

Glen Park station is at Diamond and Bosworth. Board the Richmond-bound 44 at Bosworth & Diamond, stop 13695, and ride through to the Academy stop.

This is a direct bus connection when your BART trip already brings you through Glen Park; it is not a reason to reroute every BART journey there. Return toward Glen Park from 14772.

Book the Exhibition Rather Than General Admission

The $40 public exhibition ticket includes the de Young’s permanent collection on the same day. You do not need a separate general-admission ticket. Admission to Pharaohs is granted at the time printed on your ticket, and you can visit the permanent collection while waiting.

A limited number of untimed tickets are offered for an additional fee. They allow one-time exhibition entry during regular museum hours, but waits may still occur at peak times. The supplied information does not give the additional fee; check your selected date and ticket category for the current total. Do not assume general museum discounts apply to the exhibition. Untimed ticket conditions

Regular hours are Tuesday–Sunday, 9:30 am–5:15 pm; closed Mondays. During this exhibition’s run, the museum also lists Thanksgiving and Christmas Day closures. Free permanent-collection admission at 4:30 pm does not make the special exhibition free. Hours and admission rules

Allow Two to Three Hours on Site

Reserve two to three hours on site, plus your transit journey. This is a planning allowance, not a museum-mandated visit duration. Choose an entry slot early enough to leave that time before closing.

Aim to reach the museum 20–30 minutes before your timed entry, adding a separate buffer for transit delays. Allow 90–120 minutes for the exhibition, adjusting for how much you read or use the free audio tour. Bring your phone and headphones for the tour.

Use the remaining time for a break or a few permanent-collection galleries rather than another major attraction. In dry weather, a short Music Concourse walk or the nearby Japanese Tea Garden can extend the visit. In rain or cold wind, stay with the included galleries and return by the 44.

The museum is wheelchair accessible. Wheelchairs and portable stools are available to borrow with photo ID, but cannot be reserved. Accessibility details

Add Travel Time for October 2–4 Festival Crowds

For visits on October 2–4, 2026, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass can complicate the park approach. SFMTA specifically warns of crowds on the N and 44, among other park routes, and advises extra travel time. Check service before setting out, especially when you have a timed exhibition ticket.
